Hello my name is Ms. Renner, I hope you enjoyed your summer. This year in science we will be continuing along the educational plan recommended by the NY State Science Common Core Standards. This approach will prepare you for future science courses and the NY State Science Assessment Tests. In addition, students will be able to successfully perform certain laboratory and technical skills in order to conduct investigations.
Below I have listed the items necessary for your success in my classroom. Please review the information carefully, sign where applicable and complete all contact information. This is a district wide grading policy for all the middle school science classes.
The quarterly average is derived by averaging together your test grades, labs, projects, current events, homework, and quizzes.

Class Rules and Requirements
Necessary Daily Course Materials:

Student Responsibilities:
- You are asked to be on time and prepared for class every day.
- You must be in your seat when the bell rings. Those who are not seated may be marked late. Only one unexcused lateness will be permitted, within reason. Additional latenesses will result in a lunch detention.
- You are responsible for seeking extra help when you do not understand the class materials or assignments.
- You are responsible for handing work in on a timely basis and get missed work due to illness or absence.
- Keep all electronic devices turned off and out of sight!
Rules: There are three basic rules I expect you to live by.
- Do what is right.
- Do your best.
- Do to others that you would want to have done to you.
Homework:
- Homework is intended to reinforce classroom learning.
- Homework assignments will be dealt with a variety of methods. These methods include spot checks, collection, discussion without collection, and unannounced quizzes based upon assignments.
- If your child is spending an excessive amount of time on homework assignments please contact me.
- Homework will be assigned a maximum of 3-4 times per week. All assignments will be due the following class period.
- Assignments will be given to the class by a posting in the classroom.
- Each assignment is marked out of a maximum grade of 100%.
- Make-ups of undone or incomplete homework will not be allowed except for extenuating
Labs:
- After the completion of some of the classroom labs there will be an eight question quiz based on the lab activity. The lab quiz will count for 80% of the grade for the lab. The remaining 20% will be derived from the following; completion on time, neatness, participation, and behavior during the lab activity.
- Missing Labs may be made up. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a make up date with me.
Extra Help:
- Extra help will be offered weekly prior to tests and quizzes and also upon request.
